WHOS Run for 11-11-11
Tom Geiger loves to “run”! Just ask his sister-in-law who provides the legs so he can participate in 5k running events. Tom has cerebral palsy and has been wheelchair bound his entire life. However, that isn’t stopping him from making his first trip from upstate NY to Tampa, FL to participate in the WHOS Run for 11-11-11 5k (7:30 pm) and block party (6-9:30 pm) on Nov. 11th in Hyde Park Village.
Through the national organization, myTEAM TRIUMPH, Captain Tom and three Angels will lace up their shoes, pin on their race bibs and participate in WHOS Run for 11-11-11 at 7:30 pm on Nov. 11th. WHOS is using proceeds from this event to purchase equipment so that anyone with a physical limitation has the opportunity to participate in athletic events if they have a desire to do so.
Strong as the myTEAM TRIUMPH teams are, it takes a bit more than heart, sweat, and hard work to get the Captains to the finish line. mTT uses specialized equipment approved by the ADA to ensure our Captains’ safety and success on race day. Unfortunately, high quality equipment comes at a price. Typical equipment costs to field a triathlon event are $3,000. The jogger alone is $800. Though costly, this equipment fosters strength, confidence, and joy in all involved in these races—it is honestly a small price to pay for such a profound impact.
WHOS Run For 11-11-11 5K and block party will feature food and beverage vendors, the band KAGED will play live beginning at 6 pm and the chip timed 5K run begins at 7:30 PM at the fountain area in Hyde Park Village. The route will take participants along Bayshore Blvd. with a turnaround at Bay to Bay and return to the Village where the party continues!
Run participants will receive a short sleeve t-shirt, goody bag, light nourishment at the finish line and a beverage ticket for the party. On-line registration through www.womenhelpingotherssucceed.com is $25 pp until Nov. 9th. In store registration is at Feet First, 3401 Bay to Bay Blvd. Registration during packet pickup (Thursday, Nov. 10th, from 5-8 pm) and day of event (Friday, Nov. 11th, from 5-7 pm) is $30 and will take place at Irish 31 located at 1611 W. Swann Avenue in Hyde Park Village.
